After months of experimenting with dozens of trial batches (we averaged at least one new test brew in the nano each week), we are now ready to release the new Rebel IPA recipe. Like with the original Rebel IPA recipe, this release isn't a palate-scorching hop-bomb.

Rebel IPA Samuel Adams take on the West Coast IPA style, brewed with American Cascade, Simcoe, Chinook, Centennial, and Amarillo hops, plus Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Caramel 60, then finished with ale yeast.

The initials stand for India pale ale. It was the answer to the problem of providing beer for the British Empire in the east. It was too hot to brew in India, so what was needed was a beer that could survive the gruelling six-month journey from Britain intact.

Brewery. The Boston Brewery opened in 1987 and it is where every beer was first made, aside from the Boston Lager. There are two other breweries, located in Cincinnati, Ohio and Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. The Boston Brewery is open for public tours and tastings.

German-style lager A smooth, German-style lager with slightly sweet roasted malts, notes of caramel, toffee, and a distinct noble hop character with subtle piney citrus. It ends with a crisp finish that makes you want another.

The strong, heavily hopped beer that George Hodgson brewed and sent to India is widely considered to be the first IPA and served as a prototype for modern iterations of the style. The IPA however, did not get deemed the “India Pale Ale” until 1829. The “October Ale” was the original name of Hodgson's creation.

IPA is a style of beer, which is popular enough these days to be called “regular” beer. It is a type of pale ale but is made with more hops, to give it a stronger flavour. There's no standardised threshold at which a pale ale becomes an IPA, though. It's all up to the brewer.

The Sam Adams brewers use traditional, quality two-row barley and roast the malts in various ways to reach the ideal profile for the beer.

IPAs are known for a bitter quality due to the higher than average amount of hops they contain, but there is so much more to them. Fruit and citrus notes abound in these beverages, and depending on what option you choose, you might find flavors of grapefruit, orange, and even earthier notes like pine.

Why are IPAs so popular? IPAs tend to have a cult following. They're different and interesting and have a different flavor profile than most craft beers, so they have a pretty intense following of all sorts of beer drinkers, from the occasional partaker to the enthusiast.
