The game tells the story of Maxwell searching for Starites to save his sister, Lily. Edgar and Julie, Maxwell's parents, were explorers in their younger days. They scoured the world for treasure, and eventually got married and settled down. They had 42 children, including our hero, Maxwell, and his only sister, Lily.

The objective of Scribblenauts, as implied by its catchphrase "Write Anything, Solve Everything", is to complete puzzles to collect "Starites", helped by the player's ability to summon any object (from a database of tens of thousands) by writing its name on the touchscreen.

The game was developed using an engine named "Objectnaut", which allowed 5th Cell to quickly add properties to objects and creatures. According to 5th Cell creative director Jeremiah Slaczka, Scribblenauts was developed to be more of a casual game, akin to that of Brain Age and Nintendogs. Warner Bros.
