The RAV4 Hybrid model is far more efficient than the unelectrified, gas-powered RAV4 with AWD. The EPA estimates the Hybrid will achieve 41 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 40 mpg combined, beating the regular RAV4 by 14 mpg, 5 mpg, and 11 mpg, respectively.

How does it work? RAV4 Prime uses a series parallel hybrid system, which means it can drive the wheels using both electric motors and/or its gas engine. A green battery indicator means RAV4 Prime can run on the electric motors only.

The standard RAV4 Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine working with two electric motors (one up front and one out back) and a CVT automatic to drive all four wheels. Total system output is rated at 219 hp, which gives the hybrid a 16-hp advantage over the gas RAV4.
