The peppermint mocha, a very popular holiday drink, is available at both Starbucks and Dunkin. I tried an iced peppermint mocha from both Starbucks and Dunkin to decide which one was best.

The original Starbucks peppermint latte is made with espresso, steamed milk, their own sweet mocha sauce, and a peppermint syrup. You probably already knew that it's topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings – their “dark chocolate curls,” as they call them.

Peppermint mocha is a classic holiday flavor, but Dunkin's version has too strong of a mint flavor that doesn't mix well with the chocolate. It also doesn't mix well with the coffee - I ended up drinking a mouth full of coffee and with too much peppermint swirl, which was not an appetizing taste.

It's still among the most loved holiday beverage on the menu today and is available hot, iced and blended. Its recipe has changed only a little; it's now made with 2 percent milk as the standard and with dark chocolate curls on top instead of red sprinkles.

K-Cups are approximately 1 ½ inches in height, 2 inches in diameter across the top, and 1 ½ inches in diameter across the bottom. The cups themselves were first, and some may still be, made of polystyrene, a #7 plastic that is safe for food (see Things to Note).

Starbucks iced peppermint mocha was a little bit of a letdown for me. The peppermint is not as prominent as it could be, and mocha is the defining flavor. It's still good, but it's lacking what I'm really looking for, and because of this, I have to put it at number three. It just didn't hit the spot.

A K-Cup is is coffee or tea (and recently hot chocolate and cappuccino) that is sealed in some kind of cartridge, generally a plastic cup. The cartridge has a plastic ring covered with a foil top. The inside of the capsule is lined with a filter material and keeps the coffee contained while brewing.

K-Cups offer an easy system for brewing coffee. There are no beans to grind yet the coffee is always at its freshest because each K-Cup is airtight. There are also no filters to buy or clean, and no glass carafes to break.

The Keurig's main appeal is how freaking simple it is. You just fill up the water tank, pop in a pod, press start, and you'll have coffee in less than a minute. This means you won't have to grind coffee beans, figure out how much coffee and water you actually need, or wait for a whole pot to brew. It's that easy.
