In October 2003, King's Hawaiian moved its bakery to a 151,000-square foot facility in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood of Los Angeles (which has a Torrance postal address). At the time, the new bakery was expected to be big enough for many years.

Robert Taira The tradition began with Robert Taira, the Hawaiian-born son of Japanese immigrant parents who opened a bakery in the city of Hilo in the late 1950s. So beloved were Taira's fresh-from-the-oven rolls that he quickly expanded to a larger facility in Honolulu in 1963.

The original name 'slider' was a nickname of the White Castle hamburgers. I don't know if you have ever seen one, but it is much smaller than a typical hamburger. The 'bun' is actually a parker roll. White Castle trademarked the name 'slyder' for them.

The name originated in the 1940s, when sailors in the U.S. Navy would refer to mini-burgers as "sliders" because of their extreme greasiness. In just one or two bites, the burger would just slide right down! The slider was first created at White Castle, a popular American fast food chain restaurant.
