The man who has become known as the Allstate commercial guy is Dennis Haysbert. Haysbert is an accomplished actor who has a long list of credits to his name, spanning from the late 1970s until today.

In the basketball spot, Mayhem's brother is played by Winters' real-life brother, Scott William Winters, who is also an actor known for roles on “NCIS,” “Law & Order: SVU” and other shows. The Winters have teamed onscreen before, notably playing brothers on the HBO drama "Oz."

In June 2009, Winters contracted a bacterial infection and collapsed upon arrival at his doctor's office. While being transported across Central Park in an ambulance, he went into cardiac arrest for over two minutes. Paramedics were able to revive him and he was hospitalized in intensive care for three weeks.

The Mayhem actor did die (but he's doing much better today)! Winters became extremely ill with a bacterial illness in June 2009 and was taken to Lennox Hill Hospital after falling at his doctor's office. According to HITC, he had a high fever the day before his collapse.

Although his face is arguably one of the most recognizable in the country thanks to over a decade of Allstate commercials (playing the devious character Mayhem), Dean Winters has only ever been in one other commercial, in the mid-1990s.

Winters had lost two toes, half a thumb, and the tip of his nose had fallen off. Then a nurse took him to the children's burn section. There he saw kids playing soccer with prosthetic legs. That was the turning point in his life, and he decided to relearn how to walk.

When Allstate introduced branding that year, it was without the Mayhem character or Dean Winters. The actor has also faced challenges. Winters nearly turned down the role in 2010 because of his physical condition. Winters suffers from neuropathy, nerve damage, which results in him suffering constant pain.
