Origins of 'Malibu' Some anthropologists argue the word 'Malibu' is a combination of Native American words mali + wu, which mean “where the mountains meet the sea” and the Chumash composite word Humaliwo, which means "the surf sounds loudly."

Rums originated in the West Indies and are first mentioned in records from Barbados in about 1650. They were called “kill-devil” or “rumbullion” and by 1667 were simply called rum.

Malibu Original Caribbean “Rum” is, in fact, not a rum - it's actually a coconut-flavored liqueur since there is added sugar in the drink and the alcohol level is just 21% ABV. Note that both liquors like rum and liqueurs have a wide range of ABV ratings.

Rum is a spirit made from sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. The sugarcane is fermented and then distilled. After distillation, the liquid will be clear and typically aged using bourbon casks, wooden casks or stainless steel tanks. The vessel of distillation plays a key role in what type of rum will result.

Malibu is neither strong nor technically “rum” - in fact, it's correctly classified as a coconut-flavored liqueur. This is because, while rum must have an alcohol content of 40% or higher, Malibu has a much gentler ABV rating of 21%.
