Joe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz -- and he's good. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.Soul / Film synopsis
Voiced by Jamie Foxx, the character was somewhat based on real-life middle school teacher Dr. Peter Archer, who helped shape the character in more ways than one. From the Queens borough of New York City, the 58-year-old teacher dedicated his life not only to music, but also to inspiring young people to pursue the arts.
When she got her Earth badge fulfilled and Joe told her she only completed her badge due to being in his body, 22 became depressed and decided she was not good enough for living that she allowed herself to become a lost soul where she was allowed moments of her mentors and Joe berating her to not be worthy of having a ...
After going to Earth, 22 ended up in Joe's body, near the end of the climax, 22 went to Earth as her own human, not as Joe. It's unknown what her human form looks like, it is possibly confirmed that she is a teenager with black hair and blue, aqua and purple streaks.
Docter says the film's message is that life has meaning that goes beyond personal ambition. "The movie's aim is really to say that we're already enough," he says.
The “message” of Soul
One of the key mistakes that Joe makes through this movie is thinking he has some grand purpose in life. For him, he thinks music is his purpose. It's why he was brought to earth and what he was meant to do. But music isn't his purpose, it's his spark.
The most important lesson is not to lose yourself in finding what your ambition in life is. It portrays how someone can be so blindsided by following what they want in life that they forget to stop and look around what is happening in the present. They become so focused on the future that they forget to live.
Fans may think that the number twenty-two was assigned to her by Pixar at random, but there was a secret meaning behind it; 22 is the number of Pixar films that were released before Soul came out.
But despite some early difficulties, 22 soon discovers that she was wrong to have regarded life with such cynicism, and by living in Joe's body she begins to realise what life is all about – finding her spark in the process.
Soul is quite a large scale story (for an animated film) with profound ideals, whilst Luca is a small scale story, featuring themes of acceptance. It hasn't been confirmed, but one can tell, especially another Autistic (like myself), that 22 is Autistic-Coded.
And so the two decide on a plan: if Joe can help 22 find her spark (which he takes to mean her purpose in life), she will give him her Earth pass such that he can return to Earth instead and carry on living his life.
A valuable life lesson that Soul has to teach us is to appreciate all the little moments that life has to offer us that happen in between the big moments we plan for ourselves. That's the beauty of life.
