Differin® Gel contains adapalene, a multi-benefit, dermatologist-recommended retinoid, available without a prescription, to clear breakouts where they start (deep in the pores); prevent acne before it begins; and, as a result, restore the skin's texture and tone.

Be consistent: apply Differin® Gel once a day, every day, at the same time of day. You may start to see some mild redness or irritation. Don't freak out. That's just what dermatologists call “retinization.” It's part of the process – and it's perfectly normal.

Differin Gel, also known as adapalene, is an acne treatment. Adapalene is a type of retinoid that you should not use with other skincare products like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, chemical exfoliants, or drying agents.

DIFFERIN Gel is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older. Wash affected areas gently with a non-medicated soap. Apply a thin film of DIFFERIN Gel to the entire face and any other affected areas of the skin once daily in the evening.

Whether you get Differin as a gel or a cream, it should be applied to the affected area daily as long as you continue to suffer from acne. If your acne completely clears up, you can stop the treatment, but be aware that your acne may return at some point.

Differin Gel contains 0.1% adapalene, the “strongest OTC retinoid without a prescription,” said Gmyrek, and can help prevent breakouts, treat acne and improve acne scarring and hyperpigmentation.

You should see a significant difference around the 12-week mark – clinical studies reported up to 87% acne reduction. Like any health regimen, skipping a day could lead to a setback. Continue using Differin® Gel every day, even after your skin looks clearer, for increased reduction.

Prior to applying Differin to the skin, you should wash your face with a mild and non-irritating cleanser. After that, you can apply a thin layer of Differin Gel to dry skin and follow up with a moisturizer. You shouldn't use Differin Gel more than once per day, but it can be applied in the morning or at night.

And unlike other acne treatments, it's not a spot treatment. In fact, you shouldn't apply it when you're already experiencing a breakout. Rather, it works best as a preventive measure when used regularly, and you need to apply the Differin gel on your whole face.

Retinol products are safe to use in your teens - it's just that you may not need to. Some young people use retinol for its blemish-busting properties. If you're experiencing more than the usual teenage breakout, it can help to clear things up. You might also see a reduction in the size of your pores.
