The 3 Musketeers Bar was the third brand produced and manufactured by M&M/Mars, introduced in 1932. Originally, it had three pieces in one package, flavored chocolate, strawberry and vanilla; hence the name, which was derived from the 1844 novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.

Mars, Incorporated introduced 3 Musketeers in 1932. It came in a box and had three mini candy bars in it. One was strawberry, one was chocolate and one was vanilla. Their marketing department advertised it as a candy bar so big it could be shared with two friends.

They are named for their specialist training in the use of the musket (mousquet), an early firearm originally developed in Spain at the end of the previous century under the name moschetto or 'sparrow-hawk'.

The 3 Musketeers is made up of nougat and chocolate, and according to Pennsylvania State University, the nougat consists of whipped egg whites that are sweetened, flavored, shaped into rectangles, and dipped in chocolate.

When 3 Musketeers was first introduced in 1932, it was marketed as one of the largest candy bars on the market. For five cents, the 3 Musketeers bar could be split up and shared with friends. Now, we think the 94 million-plus bars that are sold a year are more likely enjoyed alone.

The Musketeers fought in battles both on foot (infantry) and on horseback (cavalry). They formed the royal guard for the king while he was outside of the royal residences (within the royal residences, the king's guard was the Garde du corps and the Gardes suisses).

Called Musketeers of the Guard, a military branch of the Maison du Roi, they wore the famous blue tabard decorated with the cross and Fleurdelys, the symbol showing that they belonged to the King's Household.
