We spoke to Dean DeBlois on the phone, where he explained that he never wanted this series to go on forever, like some animated franchises. “I mean, honestly that was my fear going into any sequel, is that they can trail on forever and kind of lack narrative purpose,” DeBlois said.

Night Fury species As the last known specimen of the Night Fury species, Toothless is indisputably special. He commands respect from dragons and humans alike.

Description. During the film's commentary, directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois along with producer Bonnie Arnold reveal that Toothless's movements and body outline were based on one of the artist's cat.

As Hiccup explains, the dragons had to leave because humans' warring nature meant that they could no longer share the world with them, and they will only return when humans have learned to better themselves and stopped resorting to wickedness and violence.

This would mean Toothless is probably a teenager/young adult. So, not a wyrmling, nor a fully grown Dragon, but the stage in between the two. But in any case, Toothless' age could be considered young.
