Evinrude has a longstanding reputation for producing reliable and high-performance outboard motors.
Early History and ExpansionOle Evinrude invented the first outboard engine in 1907, which he developed and patented. He began selling them from a small shop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The company saw early success with the Model A, which was a hit with boaters because it was lightweight and easy to operate.
In 1929, Evinrude merged with Johnson Motor Company to form Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC). Over the next few decades, OMC became a leading manufacturer of marine engines, and the Evinrude brand expanded to include a wide range of products, including large engines for commercial boats and racing motors for speed boats.
Recent DevelopmentsIn 2000, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) acquired OMC and its major brands, including Evinrude and Johnson. BRP invested in the Evinrude brand, launching the E-TEC line of outboard motors in 2004, which featured a range of innovations designed to reduce environmental impact and increase fuel efficiency.
