The company was founded in 1986 by Zohar Norman and Yehuda Pearl as Sabra-Blue & White Foods. The company was bought in 2005 by Israeli food manufacturer Strauss. Prior to the acquisition by Strauss, Sabra had entered into negotiations to purchase Basha hummus, which was then the leading hummus brand in Detroit.

Since our humbling beginnings in Astoria Queens, NY, the Sabra Dipping Company has grown to become the leader in refrigerated dips - not to mention the maker of America's top-selling hummus - now with headquarters in White Plains, NY, a Gold LEED-certified factory in Richmond, VA, and a factory in Oceanside, CA.

Sabra, co-owned as a joint venture between Strauss Group and PepsiCo, has struggled with salmonella and listeria contamination that led to recalls going back to 2015. In December 2021, the brand received a warning letter from the FDA highlighting several violations at its Virginia plant that makes hummus.

Sabra is a nickname for Israeli Jews born in Israel. The nickname comes from the fruit that grows on a cactus. Israeli-born Jews are called Sabras because, like the fruit, they are prickly on the outside (they often seem rough and intimidating) but on the inside, they are soft and gentle.

All of these health benefits (plus many more) helped turn hummus into a popular health food snack option across the world, but especially in US culture.

The cause for concern this time was the possibility of Salmonella contamination. Responding to the FDA's evaluation, Sabra temporarily closed down the Virginia plant that year. The hiatus prompted an extensive deep cleaning, facility upgrades and the creation of new employee training protocols.
